Notts, Lincs & Derbys Shield
Grimsby 7 Newark 40
Newark bloodied three members of last season’s successful senior youth squads in this victory in the NLD Shield at Grimsby.
Lock Dan Price and prop Devan Priestley started the match and were joined later by second-half substitute Jed Chapple.
And to make the trip to the Lincolnshire coast even more noteworthy Richard Byrom, the club’s chairman of rugby, made a substitute appearance to join son Mark who was at centre.
The downside to the afternoon was a knee injury for lock James Price in the second half.
Price had earlier scored Newark’s first try following two early penalty goals from Matt Cox.
Newark’s other try scorers were Matt Clark, Will Britten, Chris Tate, Mark Byrom and Neil Clark. Cox converted two.
