Notts Cup – semi-final
A debut try for wing Nick Moore briefly gave Newark a ray of hope on a cold afternoon in the Notts Cup against Paviors.
When Moore crisply broke from near halfway following an excellent counter-attack, led by Aloesi Waqalevu and Arran Riley, Newark had started to cut into Paviors’ half-time lead of 22-0.
However, that score could not be followed up as Paviors dominated the rest of the half which was cut short by referee Bob Dudley because of injuries to front row players.
When the ref blew up Paviors had scored nine tries to run out comfortable winners in this semi-final tie. They now face either West Bridgford or Southwell in the final which is scheduled to be played on March 31.
Newark did make an excellent start and had camped on the Paviors line until flanker Arran Riley was sin binned.
Riley was quickly followed by an injury to hooker Gareth Bartsch who limped off to be replaced by Dan Dykes in the front row.
Newark’s bad luck continued later in the half when they lost prop Mason Coulam who was replaced by Lewis Himsworth.
All in all it was a tough half for Newark and Paviors turned round 22-0 up, having scored four tries.
In the second half, Moore gave Newark some brief hope but Paviros were well in control when prop Jordan Hempstead had to be helped off.
Newark squad: Mackie, Moore, Waqalevu, Birch, Hunter-Shaw, Clark, Charles, Coulam, Bartsch, Hempstead, Ellison, Bagga, Riley, Crosby, Garland (capt).
