Regional Two North Midlands
Belgrave 35 Newark 19
Newark made up for a slow start at Belgrave by fighting back to raise hopes in the second half of victory at the Leicester club.
When scrum-half James Tarbatt finished off in the 56th minute, following up good work by Josh Ashe and Hepi, Newark were only 19-25 down, Alex Scott having landed the conversion as well.
However, the bigger Belgrave pack took control of the final quarter and gained a penalty before grabbing a fifth try which finished the match.
Newark paid for that poor start in which they conceded three tries to be 17-0 down within the first 20 minutes.
To the credit of Newark they played their best rugby in the second quarter to score two tries to cut Belgrave’s lead to 17-12.
Newark’s first try came from lock Oliver Hilliam-Cooke after Hepi had been held up in the build up.
Scott failed to land the conversion but improved Newark’s second try from Josh Ashe, the wing breaking clear through the midfield after the pack had gained good line-out possession.
Belgrave finished the half on top by adding a further penalty and pouncing on Newark’s dropped pass outwide.
Newark started the second half positively and Tarbatt’s try put them right back into the contest until Belgrave bossed the final stages.
