Newark Rugby Club
Midlands Two East North
Newark 61 Belgrave 5
Newark’s backs cannot stop scoring tries as the team remain unbeaten after seven league games.
Victory by 11 tries to one over Belgrave at Kelham Road was based on the pace of a three-quarter line who provided the opportunities for wings Will Britten and Buddha Waqalevu.
Britten touched down four times and could easily have claimed a fifth but for the referee awarding a penalty try for a high tackle.
Buddha grabbed three tries while one each went to Chris Tate, Sam Sibilksi and hooker Ian Tomlinson who was the only forward to touchdown. Danny Coen landed three conversions.
Newark had the match won and a bonus point in the bag by the 19th minute when Tomlinson went over for the fourth try following efforts by Britten, in the third minute, Buddha and Tate.
By half-time Newark led 39-0, Sibilski, Britten and Buddha adding to the scoresheet in the second quarter.
To the credit of Belgrave they enjoyed a good period at the start of the second half fighting back to score their only try.
Newark, having fallen off the clinical standards of the first half, finished the second half strongly, Buddha and Britten dominating the scoring to complete a good afternoon.
The only downside was a first-half injury for centre Tom Bridges who had gained a start in the absence of Alex Moore.
Bridges was led off dazed to give an opportunity to the club’s chairman of rugby, Richard Byrom, who is on the comeback trail (again) after dislocating a shoulder in September.
Byrom took over in his familiar position of full-back while captain Tate moved up to centre. The two other substitutes prop Dave Shiels and forward Chris Coen were both used in the second half.
Next stop for Newark is at Ashbourne this Saturday, kick off 2.15pm. The 2nds are also scheduled to travel across to the Derbyshire club.
