Midlands Two East North
Newark 39 Melton 3
Four tries before half-time eased Newark into the New Year league fixtures at home to Melton.
Captain Chris Tate led the way by opening the scoring, following a series of Newark phases, in the fifth minute to start a performance which brought seven tries in all and a bonus point.
Victory keeps Newark in control at the top of the league, nine points ahead of second-placed Market Bosworth who beat Aylestone St James 30-24.
A major feature of Newark’s successful season so far has been the introduction of youth team players and, once again, scrum-half Mark Byrom and wing Will Britten were among the try scorers.
Byrom scored the second try in the 25th minute when his break down the blindside brought reward. Britten, the club’s top try scorer, delivered his touchdown in the second half.
Another big plus has been the decision to move Aloesi Waqalevu from wing to centre and ‘Buddha’ did not disappoint his fans by scoring two more tries, one in either half.
A try by Lewis Cove, following a break by Waqalevu, completed Newark’s first-half tries. Matt Cox converted the score to make the half-time score 22-0.
Newark continued on the attack in the second half bringing tries by Alex Moore and one each for Britten and Waqalevu. In between, Melton kicked a penalty goal.
