Newark did score four more tries but three came from forward drives

Midlands Two East North
Newark 53 Leicester Forest East 0

Two outstanding first-half tries capped Newark’s final home league game of the season at Kelham Road.

Newark swept to an eight-try win over Leicester Forest to register win number 20 in an unbeaten league programme so far.

How Aloesi Waqalevu and Alex Moore weaved their way through the Forest defence sent home a good crowd talking about an afternoon well spent.

Newark had taken an early lead through a penalty from fly half Matt Cox before centre Waqalevu sent home spectators into raptures.

His break from midfield first wrong-footed the Forest defence before he showed the pace that enabled him to outfox the rest of the defence.

Cox converted the try by Waqalevu before adding a second penalty in the 24th minute. That put Newark 13-0 up but the home team were immediately back on the attack when Moore grabbed the kick off.

Moore did not need any help from his team-mates as he burst clear, emulating Waqalevu minutes earlier, to score in the right corner for a memorable try.

Newark continued the good play in the lead up to half-time by scoring two further tries to gain a bonus point for scoring four or more.

No 8 Chris Coen grabbed the third after a neat pass from captain Chris Tate before wing Will Britten touched down three minutes before the interval.

Newark turned round 30-0 up and a further penalty by Cox early in the second half continued the flow of points.

But the rest of the second half did not bring the good play of the first 40 minutes. In fact, the match descended into a wrestling match at times with both teams having players sin binned.

Newark did score four more tries but three came from forward drives via Lewis Cove, Freddie Tatham and Shaun May amid some bruising play.

However, the eighth and last try had the Newark supporters cheering when wing Toby Edlin raced clear from a tap penalty.

Newark take an Easter break this week before returning on April 14 for a league game at West Bridgford. They then finish their games in the competition at Casuals a week later.
