Match Report – Midlands One East
Old Northamptonians 40 Newark 7
Newark resumed league fixtures at Northampton on Saturday, but returned another disappointing performance in a match dominated by the home team.
Two first-half tries put the Northampton team on the way to victory after a good opening by Newark whose only try came in the second half from lock Jon Evans. Matt Cox added the conversion.
Newark, who were only 12-0 down at the interval, slipped further behind at the start of the second half when they conceded two tries in quick succession.
Evans struck when Newark were 33-0 down after a period of pressure and some good pick and go tactics from the visiting pack.
One upbeat note was a good first start by scrum-half Jacob Andrews who was standing in for the injured Matt Clark who has a quad strain.
Newark’s injury problems continued when wing Toby Edlin hurt his ribs and centre Johnny Statham needed treatment for a back problem.
Newark play Spalding on Tuesday night in the NLD Shield at Kelham Road, kick off 8pm.
They are also at home next Saturday when Peterborough Lions are the visitors, kick off 3pm.
