Newark should have had the match in the bag by half-time.

Report written by Rob Wildman

Midlands One East – Saturday, Oct 27

Paviors 19 Newark 24

Newark needed a late try from No 8 Matt Brewer to rescue victory at Paviors in a match they dominated for long periods.

Brewer raced clear to score to give Newark a narrow win over their Nottinghamshire rivals who had fought back to lead 19-17 going into the final stages.

James Offer converted the try by Brewer to complete Newark’s seventh win out of eight this season and to avenge the disappointment of losing to Paviors at the end of last season, 8-5, in that tense double-header for league points and a place in the Notts Cup final.

Newark, who gave a first-team league debut to flanker Ted Bunn in the second half, should have had the match in the bag by half-time.

A quick start should have brought more than a try out wide for wing Nick Galinski, who chased up Offer’s cross field kick, plus a conversion and penalty from the fly half.
Newark led 10-0 but did not score again in a first half they dominated and by the interval Paviors had fought their way back into the contest, scoring a try off a series of pick and goes to be only 10-7 down at the interval.

Offer rewarded Newark’s bright start to the second half by kicking his second penalty but a period of sloppy play by the visitors helped hand a forceful Paviors pack two tries, the first of which was converted.

Those scores gave Paviors a 19-17 lead which forced Newark into shaping up for the last part of the match.

The pressure eventually paid off as a series of attacks led to Brewer sweeping clear to touchdown. Offer converted.
Bunn gained his debut chance when substituting lock Freddie Tatham in the second half. Jon Webster moved up to lock from a back-row where flanker Lewis Cove won coach Nathan Smith’s man-of-the-match accolade for his brave tackling.
