Midlands One East

Coalville 13 Newark 35

Newark proved fitter and quicker to outsmart Coalville for the second time this season in Midlands One East.

A strong second-half showing made certain of victory after Newark had led 18-10 at half-time.
Mark Byrom, playing at fly half in the absence of injured regular James Offer, scored two tries alongside one from substitute wing James Stark.
The first-half tries came from two other backs in Nick Galinski and Ben Dixon.

Overall Byrom had a good afternoon collecting two penalty goals and two conversions to go alongside his tries.

Victory for Newark keeps them in fifth place. They host second-placed Derby next Saturday at Kelham Road, kick off 3pm.

Newark found Coalville’s big pack difficult to control at times and the home team scored first by using their big men to grab an early try.
That score was quickly cancelled out by Nick Galinski’s try outside after some good phase play by Newark.

Newark kept up the pressure and a break by prop Jason Barnsdale set up a try for centre Ben Dixon which Byrom converted.

That gave Newark a 12-5 lead but Coalville kept in the match by fashioning a second try from their forwards.

Newark finished the half in charge, despite losing Cameron Curry to the sin bin, thanks to two penalty goals from Byrom for an 18-10 interval lead.

Though Coalville kicked an early penalty in the second half, Newark enjoyed a good half into the conditions.

A break by lock Rory Williams, on his league debut, set up Byrom for his first try which the fly half also converted.

Newark punished Coalville for losing a man to the sin bin by creating a second try for Byrom and to round off the match, substitute James Stark grabbed a late try after some more good phase work.

Scoring sequence: 5-0 Coalville try, 5-5 Galinski try, 5-10 Dixon try, 5-12 Byrom con, 10-12 Coalville try, 10-15 Byrom pen, 10-18 Byrom pen, 13-18 Coalville pen, 13-23 Byrom try, 13-25 Byrom con, 13-30 Byrom try, 13-35 Stark try.
