Newark 2nd XV 28 Paviors 2nd XV 5
I'm sure there must have been occasions down the decades when a Newark player has scored five tries on a Saturday.
But it's a safe bet that no-one has achieved that distinction by touching down a total of five times in two different games on the same afternoon.
That unique honour goes to 17-year-old Toby Waller who, judging by this performance, could be the next in a long list of teenage tyros who've recently made a seamless transition to adult rugby at Kelham Road.
Waller scored three times while making what was his senior debut against Paviors. Earlier, he'd bagged two during the first half of the Colts v Melbourne game before heading over to help out the 2s - along with some of his young colleagues.
The seconds gained revenge for the defeat at Burntstump last week thanks to four tries which were all converted by Jonny Marshall.
The victory was built on some solid and determined tackling. This time the bigger Pavior ball carriers failed to break the gain line and were often driven back several yards. Some of our own forwards made significant carriers - former captain Ben Wells being among the most prominent. Our scrum also put the visitors under a lot of pressure.
Waller opened the scoring with a break through midfield and his power - allied with a strong hand off - created his second shortly after.
Another colt, Evan Marshall also showed up strongly for the second week in a row, making another impressive 40 yard break.
Waller's third try came from another solo effort. Although tackled just short of the line, he was able to regain his feet and weave his way over to cap an unforgettable day.
A beautifully timed offload from Lenny Coen - coming on in the second half after scoring in the Colts game - found Evan Marshall who cut inside to complete the scoring, shortly after Paviors had crossed for their solitary try.
Although Waller clearly captured the headlines with that hat trick, this was an all-round impressive team performance built on a solid platform created by the forwards.
Tries: Toby Waller (3) Evan Marshall.
Conversions: Johnny Marshall (4)
