England were not the only team to stage a winning comeback on Saturday…the 2nds/3rds turned a 14-3 deficit into a 31-26 win at Kelham Road against Stamford before settling down to watch the international at Twickers.
Indeed, Stamford led 19-6 before the Newarkers found some kind of stride through the goal kicking of Matt Cox (welcome back) and a penalty try plus a score by Martin Pezet.
Cox kicked three penalty goals and a conversion to help Newark into a 23-19 lead before Stamford snatched back the lead via a breakout from their own half aided by the referee over ruling a flag for touch from the visiting touch judge!
However, Newark had the final word through a Harry Lee try and a further penalty from Cox.
Thanks to all the players for a good game and all the volunteers and club staff who made the afternoon a success helped by that England win…
The 2/3s were the only senior team to play as the 1sts had no scheduled league game. The colts match at Aireborough, near Leeds, in the National Colts Cup, was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
Next Saturday, the 1sts are at Paviors, kick off 2.15pm, and the 2nds at home to Market Rasen, kick off 2.15pm. The colts are due to host Nuneaton, kick off 2pm.
