A Brave Display Despite the Cold

A very wet and windy morning saw 9 Newark players and their hardy parents descend on Nottingham Casuals. The team consisted of Blake, Max, Alex G, Ethan, Matthew G, Munro, Henry M, Harley and Harry, although Harry had to leave before the game started, as he wasn't feeling well. Hope you're feeling better Harry!

The first game saw us take on Casuals and witness some excellent team play. There was some end to end rugby, reminiscent of the last 6-Nations game between England and France! The boys were excellent in attack, but still need a little more discipline with their defensive line, which created gaps that Casuals exploited scoring a couple of good tries, both teams played good positive rugby.

The second game against the other visiting team, Long Eaton was much more challenging. The Long Eaton lads repeatedly gave the ball to the 'big lad' who ran through our defence scoring many tries. There was still some very good play from all the Newark team in both attack and defence, but the game wasn't as enjoyable as the first game, either as player or spectator. All credit to the boys for their positive attitude and the fact that they never stopped trying or supporting each other. What was very clear to see is the level of understanding of the game, the fact that they're getting in the right position and working for each other is extremely encouraging to see the lads applying in a game the skills we've been practicing in training. Good tackling technique, a confident and coordinated defence will ensure the blue and white line of Newark isn’t ran through by the "big lad"!

Additional positives were the lads all played well and "stuck at it", despite the wind and rain and the fact that most of them couldn't feel their hands! Well done lads!

Man of Steel went to Ethan, who was like a lad possessed! Driving forward, breaking through tackles and side stepping his way to a handful of tries and was superb throughout both games in defence, making some well-timed tackles.

Remember no training next weekend....Easter bunny is coming!

Looking forward to seeing everyone at Kelham Road on 12th April for a fantastic festival of Rugby as we host two touring sides (Hitchin and Bishops Stortford) and Kesteven.

10am start (suggest you arrive early as car parking will be busy) and playing round robin games until 12ish. Everyone will be playing so bring your Newark shirts and your game face!
