A dominant display by the Forwards allows the Backs to shine on a windy day

Newark welcomed Doncaster Knights to Kelham Road on a windy day for what was expected to be a tough match on a sodden pitch, which in the warm-up turned out to be too sodden and as Newark are fortunate to have 5 pitches the match was switched to another.

The game started lively with Newark pushing hard into the wind in front of the vociferous home crowd. However, over confidence and some poor kicking saw Newark gift possession to Doncaster and after some sloppy tackling it was the visitors who ran in the first try which when converted saw them take the lead 0–7.

But Newark were not phased and immediately put Doncaster on the back foot, winning an attacking scrum just inside the Doncaster 22 which was taken forward by No.8 Nate C, who offloaded to Sam H to drive over which when converted by Oscar M, levelled the scores at 7–7.
The Newark players immediately went back on the attack from the off with a mazy run by Luke H, who was strongly supported by some strong rucking from the forwards, before the ball was taken on a sprint by Henry A for the try, 12-7

Not to be outdone by the Forwards (again!), the Backs moved the ball to the left wing and then the right, a move which was eventually ended with another strong run by Luke H who crossed the line to make it 17–7.

With the match drifting away from them Doncaster tried desperately to get back into it with some powerful running by their big Forwards, however the Newark players had other ideas and were switched on to the danger. Doncaster eventually won an attacking scrum on the Newark 5m line but when Joseph L took it against the head for Newark, much to the dismay of the visitors the attack was snuffed out.
In the last play of the half and with Doncaster continually pressing, a counter ruck by the forwards saw Elliott P immediately kick the ball up field and first to react was Luke H, who caught off the bounce and with some strong handoffs left the Doncaster defenders in his wake as he trotted over for his brace, the conversion by Oscar M took the score at the break to 24-7.

The half-time chat focussed on playing to the conditions by using the wind to keep Doncaster pinned down in their own 22.

But that didn’t go quite as expected(!) as Doncaster started the second half on the offensive and a mission to find a way back into the game, with only phenomenally stoic defence from Newark stopping what seemed an endless barrage of attacks from the Doncaster forwards.

Well into the second half and with the Newark line still intact, the boys finally remembered the game-plan! A great clearance kick from Oscar M found the Doncaster 22 and a couple of phases later saw Newark gain an attacking lineout. A training ground move borrowed from our French expedition broke the second half deadlock as Luke F ploughed through the Doncaster blindside before offloading to Mateusz D who continued the moves momentum over the line for a well worked try, 29-7.

Fitness and great support from the home crowd allowed Newark to finish strongly and they continued to press the Doncaster try line. Another lineout to Newark saw the dominant Arthur R catch well and form the driving maul, which looked like it was going all the way until it was pulled down just short of the hallowed line. The resultant scrum saw the Newark forwards have the last word with the unstoppable Luke F breaking from the base of the scrum for the try that took the final score to 34–7.

Doncaster continued to press without avail, in the face of what was a very strong performance by the entire Newark team.

Many thanks to our visitors for a very entertaining game.
