National Colts Cup
Market Rasen 17 Newark 17
A last-minute try and conversion earned Newark a draw at Market Rasen and a place in the next round of this national competition.
Extra-time is not played in youth cup ties and this match was decided on which team had scored the first try after the contest finished all square at three tries each.
Newark had scored first in the opening half thanks to a try from Ben Marshall and a second from Dan Woodward, following a forceful break by centre Henry Allen, had established a 10-0 lead.
However, Rasen fought back just before half-time to score a converted try and followed up immediately from the kick off to the second half to lead 12-10.
A third try midway into the second half put Rasen 17-10 up before Newark dominated the final minutes.
And the pressure eventually brought a third try, this time from Noah Marshall, which Oscar Corley converted.
After some debate between coaches and officials upon the final whistle, it was ruled that Newark had gone through having scored the first try.
Congratulations to the Newark squad who had beaten Doncaster in the previous round. The next round has yet to be confirmed but it looks like another away trip Chester in Round 4 and the final 16. Watch out for details…
The colts next play this Friday, at home to Kesteven, kick off 7.30pm.
