Spalding kicked off the match on an unusually warm late January afternoon at Kelham Road. The game began with intense speed as both teams vied for control and with evenly matched forward packs, it promised to be a closely contested battle. However, Newark's initial indiscipline proved costly, conceding a penalty near their own goal line. A powerful run by a Spalding forward created openings on the left, resulting in the first points of the match and a successful conversion, putting Spalding ahead 7-0.

Newark quickly responded, applying pressure, and capitalising on a well-executed lineout near Spalding's try line. Luke Fisher seized the opportunity, scoring the try, which Harry Waterhouse converted, levelling the score at 7-7.

Spalding regained the lead with another penalty near Newark's goal line, with a try and conversion, bringing the score to 14-7. The game remained tightly contested, with both teams having scoring opportunities. Henry Buck, Fin Teal, and Henry Allen made notable runs, leading to a try under the posts by Henry Allen, converted by Harry Waterhouse, levelling the scores again at 14-14 as the half neared its end.

The second half began with a rapid pace, and Newark seized the initiative, scoring a well-worked try through Henry Buck, who cleverly outmanoeuvred the defence, with Waterhouse converting, putting Newark ahead 21-14. A dynamic restart led to a try by James Jenner, following impressive runs and support play involving Henry Allen, Fin Teal, and James Jenner himself. Waterhouse's successful conversion extended Newark's lead to 28-14.

Despite Spalding's desperate attempts to rally, Newark's defence held firm, securing a hard-fought victory for the Colts.
